The Death of a Mortal

After someone dies their soul is released to journey to the Astral Sea and make their way to the City of Judgement, where their soul will be weighed any they will be cast into a plane befitting their weight. After passing through judgement there is a group of celestials representing various gods who escort souls to their particular planes. A worshipper of one of these gods will be able to tell innately which representative belongs to their god, and may choose to accompany the representative, or face judgement.

The Fall of the Holy

Following ones death on the material plane and arriving in their gods domain, some gods will give the opportunity to the soul to become a celestial, or remain as a disembodied soul in their domain. Those that become celestials are almost the same as one born purely of a god's power, except unlike pure celestials, if they perish outside of their home plane their soul will become detached from their new body and pass through judgement once again. If they have become corrupted since their initial death they will be cast into damnation, often being sent to the Nine Hells where they will become a Devil or to The Abyss where they will become a Demon or be consumed. Ordinary Angels can also become Devils should they become corrupted before perishing outside their home plane, reforming in the Lower Planes, or if they are cast out by their creator.

Redemption of the Corrupt

Following being cast into the Nine Hells as divine punishment, some souls manage to become Devils, while other become trapped as disembodied souls that will be consumed, be it by the Nine Hells itself or by its inhabitants. Devils, like Angels can rise from their damnation and change, should they become redeemed, except they can only rise to divinity if they perish on their home plane after being redeemed. In this case a mortal born soul will travel again through judgement once again, while a true Devil will travel through it for the first time, before finally arriving in the Upper Planes.
