There exist two types of Gods; those that were created through the beliefs of the peoples who believe in them, and those that rose to godhood through their own power.

Those who have come about through their followers belief gain their power though said belief and are subject to having their powers fade away should their followers dwindle.

Those that have forged their own divinity are subject to this affect as well but they will keep their innate power and will not fade away completely even if they are forgotten.
